Genetics and Reproduction Research Group
My main areas of scientific interest are on genetics of aquatic organisms of relevance to aquaculture, including: sex determination and its control; genetic management and selective breeding; chromosome set manipulations and clonal lines; genomics; cytogenetics; applications of molecular markers; transgenic fish. Current research is on sex determination, genetics of colour and genomics in tilapias, genetic management and selective breeding in species including carps and cod.
I have worked in a variety of countries over the last two decades, with a focus on SE and S Asia, mostly through projects, PhD students and consultancy on the genetics of carps. I am a member of the editorial board of Aquaculture, an adviser to the International Foundation for Science, and have served as an adviser to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and as a board member of the International Association for Genetics in Aquaculture.
I teach on modules relating to aquaculture and aquatic genetics as part of the MSc programmes in Sustainable Aquaculture, Aquatic Veterinary Studies/Aquatic Pathobiology and Aquatic Resource Development, and to BSc students in 3rd and 4th years, doing Honours in Aquaculture or Marine Biology. This involves both face-to-face teaching and distance learning.
